Building Email Lists - Things You Should Know
56
Building email lists is something that everyone talks about but no one really understands completely. Everyone has different opinions and views and there is no one best method for creating your list. There are, however, different strategies that you can use to build a great list that will generate the most opens, conversions, and repeat customers for your business. To begin with, make sure that you are starting with targeted lists instead of general email lists because it's easier to keep things moving if you have it separated from the start.
If you have a general email list and it grows to 5,000 subscribers before you get a chance to get into targeting the subscribers, you're going to be doing a lot of work on your end to get things sorted out. However, if you start by building email lists and separating subscribers by target immediately, it will all be in place from the start. You should make sure that you find people who are genuinely interested in what you have to offer and that you give them a reason to sign up. No one wants to 'sign up to get a free gift' anymore. Even if they do, they'll usually unsubscribe, never read your emails, or give someone else’s address so that they don't have to deal with it.
Think of it like free samples at the grocery store: people like to try things before they buy them. When you are building email lists, make sure that you offer subscribers a reason to sign up that is worth it to them. Don't just give them some junk article that means nothing and has no substance. Show them what you're made of and make them want to come back for more. This will give you a higher-quality list, which is always more important than the quantity of subscribers.
One important thing to know about building email lists is that you should NEVER buy lists. It might sound like a quick, easy solution to your list building needs - it just isn't the way to go. You'll get a bad reputation and your email provider will probably suspend or even kick you out when they notice that you're violating their terms of service (TOS). They will notice, too, so don't try to be sneaky. One final note about email list building: make sure that your subscribers see a privacy policy or notice to let them know their information is safe. This one tip alone will increase sign-ups.
